In a day and age where bands are more than a dime a dozen, Hail Your Highness is still pressing forward to leave whatever mark, large or small, on this industry. Over the past year and a half HYH has been put through the wringer both on a musical and more so, personal levels. What should have been a time to launch their career, turned into a test of friendships that lead to their guitarist Mike leaving in August which then lead to their bassist Trevor leaving in October. Little did Jessie and Niki know, the true test was just about to begin.
With half the band gone, Jessie and Niki were right back to where they had started almost 6 years ago. “We felt that we were pretty much done at that point, that everything we’d created was ruined. Basically, we felt defeated. We had shows coming up that we had no idea how we were going to play with a drummer and a singer,” says Jessie. They started holding auditions in their garage and were able to finish out the year with the guys trying out and with the huge help of their original bassist Sam. “Sam stepped in and has been helping us out when he can. He has commitments to his band down in Indiana, so it’s nothing full time, just when he has the down time in between tours,” Jessie said. “He’s helped us out so much more than just filling in on bass. Sam helped build us back up and showed what a true friend and brother he is to us,” the girls agree. So with only a temporary fix on the bass situation, Jessie who is also a guitar player of 10 years and a bass player of 7, will fill in on bass until there is a more permanent fix. HYH will continue to play shows with fill-ins or the ‘auditionees’ at the time until they feel they have the solid line up they need to put names in front of the slots. “Niki and I have learned to become secure in the uncertainty of all this craziness. God has always taken care of us and has provided for us and we know He’s the only thing we can put our faith in. Band members are always going to come and go and thankfully we have family, friends, and amazing lovers of our music who stand by us and we love them so much for it.”
The future for Hail Your Highness lies in the hands of the 2 girls that founded it more than 5 years ago. If they continue to work as hard as they have to get to this point, the future will hold great things for this band that continues to push the levels of a “genre specific” band. “The new found freedom Niki and I have found in writing new music has pushed us to create something that we can’t even put a genre name on, it continues to baffles us on what to call it. It’s still heavy with a pop twist, but it goes even deeper lyrically and musically has an almost experimental/indie vibe to it which has been really freeing. As long as we’re still given opportunities to create and play music, we’re going to jump at the chances. The feeling of God touching others lives through our music is one that can’t be described. It has to be the most fulfilling thing we’ve ever done with our lives and we’re not going to stop or let anything get in the way of what God has called us to do.”
